Having a good time, making new friends, and having loud campus get-togethers and programmes are universally associated with university life. Many people would presume that uni is all about exciting events, exploring the world beyond where you come from, and navigating all that we mentioned above – but the reality is that living independently lies at the heart of all those notions. It’s all about where you come back to once the day is done and you’re ready to unwind.
Some students may have already started looking for alternative places to live (second-semester changes) while others may have decided to be closer to the institution due to face-to-face classes slowly resuming, searching for potential accommodation providers in the institution for the following four years (we hope). In all of this, there are a few difficulties with student living besides having to share a space with other people; but this shouldn’t matter because we’re dropping 10 nuggets on living your best life while at varsity.
Get to know your roommate(s) or housemates
Take the time to introduce yourself and establish open lines of communication. Discuss expectations, boundaries, and any concerns you may have. It’s important to have a respectful and understanding relationship with your roommate(s). Also, your room/housemates end up being your family throughout the year – the memories you make with them are low-key priceless – so why not build these bonds sooner rather than later?
Keep your room organised
Student accommodation rooms are typically small, so it’s essential to keep things tidy to maximize the space. Use storage solutions like under-bed bins, hanging organisers, and shelves to help you stay organised. This will make it easier to find things and create a more comfortable living environment. Your room may be small, but it doesn’t have to feel cramped.
Respect quiet hours
Many accommodation providers have designated quiet hours to ensure a conducive environment for studying and sleeping. Be considerate of your neighbours and follow these guidelines. If you need to study or make noise during off-hours, consider using common areas or study rooms.
Be mindful of shared spaces
Common areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, and lounges are shared by multiple residents. Clean up after yourself, be respectful of others’ belongings, and follow any guidelines or rules set by the house rules. A harmonious living environment is built on mutual respect. Just don’t be that person who makes it hard for everyone else – side eye!
Develop a study routine
Living in a student hub can be full of distractions, so it’s important to establish a study routine that works for you. Find a quiet place to study, create a schedule, and stick to it. This will help you stay focused and maintain good academic performance. Also, the crux of a productive study routine is ensuring that you know your peak times; we don’t all have to study in the morning and some of us prefer to sleep at night. Knowing which time of the day suits you best will help you build a study timetable with the right gaps at the right times.
Get involved in activities
Participating in campus activities and events is a great way to meet new people and make friends. Attend floor or building gatherings, join clubs or organisations affiliated with your accommodation provider, and take advantage of the social opportunities available to you. You also find yourself and where you fit in when you’re exposed to social events on and off campus. Whether it’s attending a sporting event that you normally don’t watch or joining a club or activity you’ve never considered before, going out and joining things on and off campus is a great way to discover what appeals to you and what interests you didn’t know you had.
Be mindful of noise levels
Living in close proximity to others means that noise can easily travel. Be conscious of your noise levels, especially during quiet hours, and avoid disruptive activities that may disturb your neighbours. Headphones can be a useful tool when listening to music or watching movies in your room. We know you’re a Chakra hun who loves meditating in the morning, but some people are the gust of wind to your matchstick flame – so be considerate.
Take care of your mental and physical well-being
Uni life can be stressful, so make sure to prioritise your mental and physical health. Get enough sleep, eat well, exercise regularly, and reach out for support if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Most universities offer counselling services or resources to help students navigate these challenges.
Familiarise yourself with the student accommodation policies
Each accommodation provider may have its own set of policies and house rules. Take the time to read and understand them to avoid any misunderstandings or potential penalties. Knowing the guidelines will also help you make informed decisions.
Enjoy the experience
Living in a student environment is quite a unique experience that can offer many opportunities for personal growth, independence, and lifelong friendships. Embrace the experience, be open to new connections, and make the most of your time in the place.
